Lab Requirements

Hands-On Labs for the

Lumbopelvic RUSI Course

All participants should be prepared to participate as both clinician and model throughout the course. Please wear appropriate clothing that allows for exposure of the trunk and midsection.

The course has three transperineal imaging labs for female and male anatomy which do not include intracavity palpation. Pelvic health training is required to participate in the transperineal labs as a clinician. Orthopedic therapists may observe the transperineal labs and are encouraged to stay for the duration of the course.

While it would be ideal to have an equal number of people with male and female anatomy as course participants, that rarely is the case. Site hosts will attempt to arrange for at least one cisgender male body model, but that may be as a demonstration only and does not guarantee the opportunity for hands-on practice. Participants who live locally are strongly encouraged to recruit partners, current patients, or colleagues to serve as models for the transperineal lab for male anatomy. If you have a lab model, please convey that information to your site host.

Any self-host participant who is operating as a sole student will need to arrange for non-clinician male and female anatomy models for each lab session of the course. See the course schedule for lab times and topics.

All ultrasound equipment and supplies will be provided for Host and Satellite locations. Participants are self-hosting are responsible for obtaining the following list of supplies for labs.

Disinfecting Wipes

Alcohol and chlorine-based germicides may damage the flexible ultrasound transducer surface; the use of approved alcohol-free and bleach-free products are required for disinfection between patients

The Sani-Cloth® AF-3 (Grey-Top) disposable wipe for the surface cleaning of the Ultrasound transducer has been a reliable product and is readily available through medical products suppliers as well as Amazon.

Sono Disinfecting Wipes are another option that was developed exclusively for the ultrasound industry and is easily available on Amazon Link

Probe Covers

For transperineal ultrasound you need an FDA approved US probe cover. We recommend a seamless viral barrier probe cover from Sheathing Technologies because of its superior performance and low failure rate over similar products.

I have worked with Breana Fata, (no disclosures) she is familiar with what Physical Therapists are looking for that is different than sonographers or physicians and will send free product samples to help you find the correct cover for your needs. Most importantly for PTs, the non-sterile probe covers is fully acceptable, and much less expensive than the sterile procedure probe cover used in most hospital ultrasound applications.

Sheathing Technologies probe covers vary depending on the shape and size of the ultrasound probe. The best purchase option is a bulk box of 50 and cost between $1.05-$1.50 each, and are more expensive in smaller quantities.

For the Prometheus System: Item #80501

For Sonosite and MindRay Systems: Item #50001-1245
